Lambie targets govt on ice rehab funds

Independent senator Jacqui Lambie wants to know how many ice addicts could be helped for the cost of killing one terrorist in the Middle East.

So she asked the government exactly that, citing advice from a "well-respected" military intelligence officer it cost $5 million to drop one laser-guided bomb in Syria.

"How many ice rehab and detox beds for addicted children could the government provide for $5 million?" the former military cop asked government Senate leader Eric Abetz during question time on Tuesday.

Senator Lambie's son struggles with ice addiction and she has publicly aired her battle controlling his drug use.

But Senator Abetz said the attempt to score cheap political points by linking ice addition to Australia's involvement fighting Islamic State in the Middle East did Senator Lambie "no credit".

The question followed two others requesting the government work with crossbenchers on laws to force drug addicts into involuntary detox.

Senator Abetz said the government would consider any ideas on tackling ice and other illegal drugs, including forcing people into rehab.

"I for one, and please don't take this as government policy, but I must say I am attracted to the suggestion of the honourable senator," he said.

He advised Senator Lambie to ensure any bill was based on evidence and had professional input.
