Labor on track to win federal election

Labor is on the way to winning the federal election despite the party's primary vote dropping, according to the latest Newspoll figures.

The two-party preferred split showed Labor in the lead with 51 per cent, and 49 per cent for the Coalition, the poll figures released in The Australian show.

However the Labor party's primary vote dropped down to 36 per cent, the lowest since August 2018 when Scott Morrison became prime minister.

Support for the Coalition remained unchanged at 38 per cent.

The poll showed Mr Shorten shedding four points in his approval ratings to 35 per cent while Mr Morrison dropped one point in his approval ratings to 44 per cent.

Mr Morrison remained preferred prime minister with the gap widening three points to 46 per cent to 35 per cent.

The Greens remained unchanged at nine per cent, Clive Palmer's United Australia Party dropped one point to four per cent while Pauline Hanson's One Nation gained one point to make five per cent.

The poll conducted between May 2 and 5 was based on a sample of 2003 voters.
