A koala has been spotted swimming across a river on the Gold Coast this morning.

The marsupial was seen swimming through the Coombabah Lakelands, cooling off as warm weather heats up the Gold Coast.

Local Emma CarMichael captured the moment on video while on her regular morning walk.

"We didn't see him get in, we noticed him about halfway between the two banks," CarMichael told 9news.com.au

"We thought it was a dog swimming at first and then realised it was a koala when it came out of the water.

"We've never seen a koala there, we always keep our eyes out for one, then we ended up seeing one swimming in the water, the most unlikely place."

"We thought it was so cute."

The Gold Coast is expected to reach a warm 25 degrees today.
