PM to attend coronation of King Charles III - and some 'outstanding' Aussies will score an invite too

Anthony Albanese will travel to London to attend the coronation of King Charles III.

The prime minister will be joined by Governor General David Hurley, the King's representative in Australia, for the May 6 event.

He said a number of "outstanding citizens" would also be attending the historic occasion, with a "significant" number of Indigenous Australians requested by the palace.

"A number of other notable Australians, most of which are based in the United Kingdom, have been chosen to show the world the best of our values - caring for others, serving the community and championing progress," Mr Albanese told parliament on Thursday.

"And I note that the palace requested in particular that there be significant representation from Indigenous Australians as part of the coronation."

In the only hint to who the others may be, Albanese said a holder of the Victoria Cross and the Cross of Valour will attend, along with a representative of the Australia Defence Force.

State governors will also attend.

Albanese went to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in September 2022 and met the King.

The May trip will also involve a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and a visit to a shipyard where submarines purchased under a recent AUKUS deal will be built.
