Monster factory blaze reignites hours after firefighter’s departure

Smouldering debris has sparked fresh gas explosions at a factory in Melbourne's east.

The blaze initially started about 2pm at the Canterbury Road building in Kilsyth, with gas cylinders inside exploding and spreading flames.

A witness told 9News they saw cylinder skyrocket up to “30 metres into the air.”

Crews worked for nearly two hours to control the huge fire, which spread to a nearby parked car and put a neighbouring cabinet-making factory at risk.

“There were a number of explosions that were seen and felt,” a CFA fireman said.

A man working at the factory was taken to the Alfred Hospital where he is being treated for burn injuries to his face and chest.

He is now in a stable condition.

The blaze was deemed under control about 4pm, however more combustible material inside the factory later ignited.

Fire crews were forced to return in the early hours of the morning, working to extinguish the new blaze.

The factory this morning remains cordoned off by police, with investigators set to probe circumstances surrounding the blaze.
