A man is in a critical condition after being stabbed multiple times outside a fast food restaurant on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Police were alerted after the 21-year-old man showed up at Kempsey Base Hospital with several stab wounds to his chest and back, just before 6pm yesterday.

He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Investigators made inquiries which led to a McDonald's carpark on Smith Street, Kempsey being closed off as a crime scene.
