'Could have done things differently', police commissioner says after recent controversy

Police Commissioner Karen Webb has told 9News that she could have done some things differently after recent controversy, including her actions after senior cop Kristian White was charged with manslaughter.

Webb spoke out about the sacking of White today after she faced criticism from Clare Nowland's family that her actions were "too little, too late".

White was found guilty of manslaughter after Tasering 95-year-old Nowland in a Cooma nursing home, causing her to fall and hit her head, rendering her unconscious.

She later died from the injuries.

"I understand how upset [her family] are but equally I have to follow a process the legal process," Webb said.

White was sacked a week after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Webb also said she could have done some things differently when asked about people questioning her leadership.

"I could've done things differently but I can't change that now, really I'm looking forward, already thinking about what are out areas of focus for 2025."

The largest group of new police recruits are a focus for the commissioner for the next year, as well as cracking down on domestic violence and gang violence.

Webb said the recent shooting that left pubgoers terrified in Sydney's CBD was a "new low" for her as commissioner.

"Really it's probably a new low for me that it was in such a busy part of Sydney at that time of day," Webb said.

The alleged gang hit took place on Baptist Street in Sydney at 7.45pm on a Friday.

Witnesses at nearby pubs described falling over each other trying to dodge stray bullets.

Webb said she hopes the record amount of recruits signing up after a recent pay bump means the NSW streets will become safer.
