Brollies needed in leaky Qld court: judge

A judge has bemoaned the appalling state of a southeast Queensland courthouse, saying corridors run with water when it rains and staff have to use umbrellas inside to stay dry.

Retiring District Court Judge John Robertson says the Maroochydore Courthouse is a white elephant and wants the state government to relocate it.

He says jurors have to put up with terrible conditions and judges have resorted to using umbrellas inside their chambers.

"We actually have running water but when you think of running water, you don't think as you're walking down the corridor you're dodging buckets, or in Judge Long's case, or Judge Dodds before him, having to put up an umbrella in chambers," Judge Robertson said.

But a spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Attorney-General says the Sunshine Coast building is relatively new and there are no plans to move it.

"The current courthouse is only 26 years old and is regularly maintained to the appropriate standard."
