The jobs that got the biggest pay boosts in the 2024 financial year
New numbers have revealed the jobs that received the biggest pay bumps in the 2024 financial year - and a clear theme emerged from it.
The Australian Financial Review, citing research by consultants Mercer, found that engineering and science workers were among the most in-demand around Australia, along with repair and maintenance workers.
This is partly at least due to the ongoing push to transition from fossil fuels, which requires a big workforce.
Here are the top 10 biggest pay rises of the most recent financial year.
10. General repair and maintenance trades - entry para-professional
Wages rose 8.1 per cent.
Mercer Pacific workforce consulting and products business leader Cynthia Cottrell told the AFR said the industries featured in the top 10 had high barriers to entry.
9. Contact centre/online customer service - entry para-professional
Wages rose 9.3 per cent.
8. Civil/construction engineering - experienced professional
Wages rose 9.5 per cent.
Mercer's research also differentiated between the increases offered to different sections of the same workforce.
Civil/construction engineering also appears again higher up on the list, but this number is the increase, on average, the "experienced professionals" were offered.
7. Environmental engineering - experienced professional
Wages rose 10 per cent.
The prominence of environmental engineers on the list signals the infrastructure workforce's changing priorities and needs.
6. General engineering - entry professional
Wages rose 11.4 per cent.
The median increase for Australian workers as a whole in the past financial year was four per cent, but every job on this list received more than double that - at least.
5. Civil/construction engineering - entry professional
Wages rose 12.1 per cent.
There was a bigger increase for entry-level workers than for experienced workers in civil/construction engineering.
4. Other repair and maintenance trades - experienced para-professional
Wages rose 12.9 per cent.
3. Engineering design services - specialist para-professional
Wages rose 13.1 per cent.
Cottrell told the AFR that a combination of the energy industry transition and big government infrastructure projects had prompted a surge of demand for engineering workers.
2. Environmental and employee safety engineering - entry professional
Wages rose 13.2 per cent.
