Inquiry finds quarry played no role in Grantham flood deaths

The Grantham Floods Commission of Inquiry has found that a local quarry played no role in the deaths of 12 people during the 2011 Queensland floods.

Former Queensland solicitor-general Walter Sofronoff QC handed down his inquiry's report to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this morning, and found quarry owner Dennis Wagner and his family were unjustly blamed and unfairly targeted as the culprit of the devastating flood.

"There were only two relevant man-made structures. One was the quarry pit and the associated embankment and the second (was) the railway embankment that has been there for about 100 years," he said.

"Both had insignificant evident effect, measurable effects but insignificant, that is to say if they weren't there nothing would have been different.

"I found that the quarry did not find any role in the flood."

Mr Sofronoff said the Wagner family was "viciously blamed by some elements of the media and they shouldn't have been," he said.

Over four weeks of public hearings, 41 witnesses gave evidence, including a hydrology expert who found the quarry had minimal impact.

Despite the finding, a number of residents from West Grantham, who live closest to the quarry, still argue it played a part in the loss of 12 lives, and the destruction of more than 50 homes.
