Industry urges safety on Halloween night

Not wanting to spook people heading into Halloween night next week, a peak industry body has urged parents to take precautions for their children's safety when it comes to "trick-or-treating".

Head of the Australian Industry Group in Victoria and its confectionary sector Tim Piper said Halloween has become a popular community activity in Australia that all the family can get involved in.

"But it's also important to keep safe, have some rules and ensure the kids know how to celebrate this event," he said in a statement on Saturday.

With 'trick-or-treating' in mind, the confectionary industry has launched an initiative 'Be treatwise' that sets out a six-step safety plan.

* Make a plan - help your children make smart decisions when it comes to the enjoyment of Halloween treats.

* Eat before you go out - ensure trick or treaters have a healthy snack before you hit the streets.

* Keep it safe - have a responsible adult accompany trick or treaters.

* Understand confectionery treat portions - some for now, some for sharing, some for later.

* Embrace balance - by balancing treats and being physically active.

* Don't forget to brush your teeth.

Mr Piper added a seventh rule.

"If you are buying confectionary, it's best to buy small individually wrapped packets that offer small portions," he advises.
