Incredible drone footage shows three sharks off South Australia's coast

Drone footage from South Australia's Kangaroo Island has captured the moment three sharks made an appearance close to the water's surface.

The footage was taken at Pennington Bay, on the south side of Kangaroo Island by resident Grant Coutts, with the help of a drone.

It shows a school of salmon swimming away from three sharks, which are believed to be bronze whalers.

"People do go to Pennington Bay to swim and surf, there's pretty good waves for surfing but at that time there wasn't anyone in the water," Coutts said.

The bay is located in a remote stretch of coastline, on the opposite side of the island to where the ferry operates at Penneshaw.

Coutts has lived on the island for four years and says he's seen more sharks recently than ever before.

"The whole time I've been here I haven't seen many sharks but over the past couple of weeks it seems almost every time I put the drone up in the sky," Coutts said.

Marine researcher Andrew Fox has been investigating the high number of shark sightings along the South Australian coast.

"To be able to see so many sharks in the water at once for sure pretty exciting," Fox said.
