New IMAX cinema set to open in Sydney after a four-year delay

Sydney's IMAX cinema is set to reopen soon following its closure in 2016.

The giant-screen cinema was supposed to reopen at its new site in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as building issues, pushed the renovation back by three years.

Event Cinemas will own the new 693 square metre screen and will showcase new releases in 4K laser projection - the highest level of video visual quality.

The new IMAX screen will be the third biggest owned by the company in the world.

It will share a building called "the Ribbon" with the Marriott's new W hotel, not far from its original home in Darling Harbour.

"There's a really great dining precinct around us, supporting our experience, and also the hotel," Event's director of entertainment Luke Mackey said.

"I think it's going to be an absolute renaissance for that area."

The construction of the Ribbon - and consequently the new IMAX cinema - was delayed when the company tasked with building it, Grocon, collapsed in 2020.

Probuild then took over and went into administration last year.

Multiplex is now in charge of the build and it is tracking well, according to Event Cinemas.

"It's been a challenging five or six years for lots of building companies," Mackey said.

"We're in great hands now and I've been to the site recently and it's well advanced.

"Touching wood, it's smooth sailing from here on in."
