IKEA recalls popular charger over electric shock, burns risks

Australia's consumer watchdog has issued a recall for an IKEA USB charging cable, sold nationally, over potential safety risks to customers.

The Askstorm 40W USB charger posed the risk of electric shock, burn injuries or even death, the the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC0 said.

Shoppers are being warned the power cable, available in a dark grey colour, can become damaged or broken, exposing users to "live parts" of the cable.

"There is also a risk of damage to property if the charger catches fire," the ACCC said.

"Incidents have occurred where cables were damaged and caused electric shock and burn injuries to consumers."

Consumers should stop using the product immediately and contact Ikea to receive a full refund.

A proof of purchase receipt is not needed.

The USB charger was available for sale from April 1, 2020, to December 5 last year.

The model number is ICPSW5-40-1, which can be found on the label at the charger's base.
