Hunt for owner after Gold Coast man finds wedding ring at beach

When Gold Coast man Callum Casserly went down to the beach for a swim on New Year's Day, the last thing he expected to find was a stranger's wedding ring.

The local mechanic and model told 9news.com.au he had taken his mum to The Spit for a quick dip on Sunday when he felt something hit his toe in the water.

"I was only knee-deep in the water and I felt something really sharp," he said.

"I initially thought it was a seashell … but I put my hand down to pick it up and it was just this bright gold ring, shining through the clear water."

Casserley said it appeared to be a wedding ring.

"I think it's a wedding band, it has two initials and the love heart engraved on the inside," he said.

"It looks pretty clean, like it's not been in the water for long - it's not tarnished.

"But the ring does have a bit of wear on it, it's been someone's pride and joy."

Casserly said he was now on a mission to track down the owner of the ring so he could return it to them.

"It's the right thing to do.

"It would just make me so happy to see that ring reunited with its owner because I can imagine the panic that will be happening. 

"To get this back to the owner would just be a fantastic start to the new year."

After sharing his find on Facebook, Casserly said he was told the design of the ring appeared to be similar to a Polynesian wedding ring, perhaps from Samoa or Tonga.

"It's quite a large ring and solid gold, it's stamped as 14-karat gold," he said.
