The Hume Highway has been closed in both directions in Sydney's south-west after a crash between a tanker and a car.

The driver of the car was trapped after the crash on the corner of Henry Lawson Drive and Woodville Road in Lansdowne, also known as the Meccano Set, just before 4pm.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was freed from his car and will be taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Emergency services are on the scene and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Aerial images from the 9NEWS chopper showed the Mitsubishi Mirage on its roof after the crash.

"The Hume Highway is closed in both directions at the intersection of Henry Lawson Drive/Woodville Road," the NSW Transport Management Centre advised.

"All northbound lanes of Henry Lawson Drive and all southbound lanes of Woodville Road are also closed.

"Traffic in the area is heavy so motorists are advised to use an alternative route."
