Human remains found on a vacant block in South Australia have been confirmed as missing person Geoffrey McLean.

Detective Inspector Brett Featherby confirmed the 55-year-old father's body had been found in Salisbury South on Monday and his identity was confirmed through DNA testing.

"When Geoffrey's body had been located, it had been dismembered, it was located in a wheelie bin," Featherby said.

"We've only recovered his torso. We're firmly focused on recovering the rest of his remains.

"Evidence suggests persons or a person was in the process of burying those remains and may have been disturbed."

Featherby said the person or persons involved in the alleged murder were either burying the body or had left his remains.
