UPDATE: Fire at Port Kembla steel plant under control with help of heavy rain

A massive fire engulfed a steel plant at Port Kembla, near Wollongong, collapsing the site’s 80m tall stack today.

Fire broke out in the BlueScope Steel plant shortly before 6pm.

Eight fire engines and more than 40 firefighters battling the blaze for several hours.

Their efforts were assisted by the pouring rain.

The fire is now under control but authorities are yet to decide whether the entire stack needs to be pulled down.

Large plumes of black smoke and flames could be seen billowing out of the structure from suburbs away.
