HSU official used $1m in union funds

Union whistleblower Kathy Jackson has been accused of using $1 million in union funds to pay off two personal credit cards, which she says were used for work expenses.

The Health Services Union (HSU) national secretary, who blew the whistle on former union boss Michael Williamson, and Craig Thomson, also withdrew a further $220,000 in cash using union bank cheques, Fairfax Media reported on Friday.

Ms Jackson did not respond to questions from Fairfax, which has not accused her of criminal conduct, but the report says HSU officials have forwarded banking documents to the royal commission into union corruption.

A leaked police statement obtained by Fairfax reveals Sydney businesswoman Carron Gilleland sought Ms Jackson's help when Ms Gilleland raised concerns about possible corruption involving Williamson and Thomson more than a decade before Ms Jackson reported them to police in 2011.

Ms Gilleland made the allegation in a sworn police statement in 2012 during the inquiry into since convicted HSU bosses Williamson and Thomson, the report said.
