How to Choose 9News as your preferred source in Google's Top Stories

Google has introduced a new feature called "Preferred Sources," designed to give you more control over the news that appears in your search results. Instead of just relying on Google's algorithm for the "Top stories" section, you can now tell Google which websites and what sources you would like to see more frequently.

When you set a publisher as a preferred source, its articles will show up more prominently in your "Top stories" when they are relevant to what you're searching for. This gives you quicker access to content from sources you prefer, saving you from scrolling through to find your preferred news outlet.

How to Set Your Preferred Sources on Google

What you need: A computer or phone with internet access, a web browser and make sure that you are signed in to your Google Account.

1. Search for a trending topic

To get started, you need to perform a search that brings up the "Top stories" section. This section only appears for topics that Google considers newsworthy and fresh, so pick something timely. For instance, searching for "breaking news" will likely show a "Top Stories" result.

• Open your browser and navigate to Google, or click this link
• Type a current event or "breaking news" into the search bar
• Find the "Top stories" box, which usually appears near the top of the results

3. Find and add your favourite sites

You can now search for and add any website you'd like to prioritise.

• Use the search field in the new panel to find our site, "9News"
• Click the "Add" button or checkbox next to the site's name to add it to your list
• You are able to add more than one preferred source, including "Nine.com.au" 

4. Save your changes

After you have finished adding your sources, click the "Reload results" button in the panel. Google will now start prioritising your chosen sites in the "Top stories" section the next time you search for a trending topic that those publications have covered.
