How the internet reacted to the extraordinary Oscars mix-up

Hysterical tweets and memes have flooded the internet as social media reacted to one of the most memorable mistakes in Oscars’ history. 

Viewers were left in a state of disbelief similar to those at the Dolby Theatre when it was revealed La La Land had not won Best Picture. 

"I'm sorry, there's been a mistake,” the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz said, before announcing Moonlight as the real winner.

As it became clear the hubbub was “not a joke”, savvy social media users leapt onto Twitter. 

Many compared the extraordinary error to Steve Harvey misreading the winner of Miss Universe in 2015.

Former Academy Awards host, Billy Crystal, led the charge of celebrities tweeting their thoughts on the mistake.
