Oscars 2017: Moonlight awarded best picture after excruciating mistake
Moonlight has won best picture at the 89th Academy Awards after a baffling and excruciating mistake that saw actor Warren Beatty announce the wrong winner.
The producers of La La Land were in the middle of their acceptance speeches. The celebrated musical comedy-drama had already collected six gongs out of a record-tying 14 nominations.
But the fairy-tale came to an abrupt halt as producer Jordan Horowitz took to the mic and said the unthinkable: "I'm sorry, there's been a mistake".
Shock spread through the Dolby Theatre as the reality of the error sunk in and the producers of Moonlight were invited on stage.
Horowitz graciously passed his statue to the Moonlight producers after flashing the inside of the envelope as proof of the blunder.
"I wasn't trying to be funny," Beatty explained, saying he had seen the name Emma Stone from La La Land when he opened his envelope.
He had somehow been given the envelope from the previous award which Stone had, in fact, won.
Kimmel tried to focus the audience's attention firmly on the silver lining.
"I don't know what happened. I blame myself for this. Let's remember it's just an awards show," he said.
"I mean, we hate to see people disappointed. But the good news is we got to see some extra speeches."
"I knew I would screw this up," the first-time host said. "I promise to never come back."
Up until the chaotic end, the telecast had seesawed between jabs at Donald Trump and passionate arguments for inclusivity, with awards going to "La La Land," ''Moonlight" and "Manchester by the Sea."

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won the Oscar for best foreign language film, but was not in Hollywood to accept the award, having boycotted the ceremony in protest at President Donald Trump's executive order banning visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries. The award was accepted in his absence by Iranian American Anousheh Ansari, the first female private space explorer.
Directors of the five nominees for best foreign language film, including Farhadi, issued a statement condemning "the climate of fanaticism and nationalism" in the US.
Several stars including nominees Ruth Negga and Lin-Manuel Miranda wore blue ribbons in support of the American Civil Liberties Union, a high-profile civil rights organization.
The awards season has a long tradition of political activism, from Marlon Brando's Oscars snub in 1973 to Meryl Streep's rousing anti-Trump speech at this year's Golden Globes.
Kimmel made mention of Mr Trump's retort that Streep was "highly overrated" -- by recalling her record 20 nominations, and urging everyone to offer her a standing ovation. The audience willingly complied.
Australia collected two gongs both for Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge.
Australian sound mixers Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace won the sound mixing Oscar but the trio stood back and let their iconic American colleague, Kevin O'Connell, take the spotlight.
O'Connell is an icon in movie sound mixing but until today he held the unfortunate record for having the most Oscar nominations of any person without winning.
It was on his 21st, for Hacksaw Ridge and surrounded by Aussies, he broke the drought.
The third time was the charm for Viola Davis, who beat Aussie Nicole Kidman to take home the best supporting actress Oscar for her gut-wrenching performance in the big screen adaptation of August Wilson's searing play "Fences".
Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim to win an Academy Award, taking out the Best Supporting Actor category for his work in Moonlight.
The "OscarsSoWhite" crisis of the last two years was largely quelled this season by a richly diverse slate of nominees, thanks to films like Moonlight, Fences and Hidden Figures. A record six black actors were nominated. For the first time ever, a person of color was nominated in each acting category. And four of the five best documentary nominees were also directed by black filmmakers.
