Staff in NSW hospital allegedly threatened by man wielding a syringe filled with blood

Hospital staff in New South Wales' Hunter region have been allegedly threatened by a man carrying a blood-filled syringe.

Police charged a 32-year-old who had been taken to Maitland Hospital at around 4.30pm on Monday for medical treatment.

After arriving he allegedly became aggressive to staff and was asked to leave by hospital security.

The man then returned a short time later and allegedly threatened security staff and a nurse with a syringe filled with blood.

At one point the man allegedly dropped the syringe, but continued threatening staff before police arrived.

After a short struggle the man was arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station.

He resisted being arrested and was allegedly abusive to police officers.

The nine charges laid against him included behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place or school, stalking or intimidating to create fear or physical harm, and being armed with the purpose of committing an indictable offence.

The man was denied bail to appear at the Maitland Local Court today.
