HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS
* 1977 - Former Liberal minister Don Chipp establishes the Australian Democrats.
* 1980 - The party secures the balance of power in the Senate.
* 1986 - Don Chipp resigns. Janine Haines becomes first woman to lead an Australian political party.
* 1993 - After leadership changes through the early 1990s, Cheryl Kernot becomes party leader.
* 1996 - Popularity peaks with nine senators in the upper house.
* 1997 - The party becomes the first to apologise to the Stolen Generations.
* 1999 - The party comes to agreement with the then Howard government over introduction of the GST.
* 2004 - Party loses four senators at general election.
* 2007 election - The party fails to hold on to its last four Senate seats.
* April 16, 2015 - The party is deregistered by the Australian Electoral Commission.
