High chance of tropical cyclone developing off Queensland this weekend

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned there is a high chance of a tropical low developing into a cyclone off the Queensland coast by Sunday.

Tropical Low "22U" is forecast to develop off the North Queensland Coast, and keep developing in the northern Coral Sea.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the system was expected to move east or south-east and remain well away from the Queensland coast.

Despite that, they said the low had a moderate chance of becoming a cyclone on Saturday, with that probability becoming high on Sunday.

Another tropical low, known as "21U" is developing north-west of the Kimberley in Western Australia.

It will also remain well off the coast of Western Australia in the coming days.

Tropical Cyclone Zelia impacted Western Australia last week.

Even if the cyclones don't make landfall in Queensland, they could still bring heavy rainfall to flood-affected regions.

There is rainfall forecast tomorrow for Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton.

Thunderstorms are possible for the rest of the day in northern, northwestern, and inland central Queensland, along with the southeast interior.

PM avoids namesake cyclone

Going down the list of names for the next cyclone, the next one to form in Australian waters was supposed to be called "Anthony".

The Bureau of Meteorology has shuffled the name to avoid any confusion with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, so the next cyclone will be titled "Alfred".
