An uninsured motorcyclist is thanking his GoPro footage which has forced an at-fault driver to fork out thousands of dollars.

In March of this year, Chris Porter was thrown from his bike on South Road, Moorabbin in Melbourne’s southeast after colliding with an elderly driver.

Bystanders ran to his aid as the driver pullover over and stood back in shock.

Mr Porter suffered only a knee injury in the March accident, but his uninsured bike was a write-off.

While witnesses accused Mr Porter of lane-splitting, the GoPro footage later suggested otherwise.

Sales of dashcams in Australia have almost tripled since Hanuary, largely for insurance reasons, and lawyers say so long as they are used to film in a public place, they can also be used as evidence in court.

Police have praised the use of dashcams saying they protect the innocent.
