Three flood rescues in northern NSW

Three flood rescues have been carried out in northern NSW as rain inundates the region causing flash flooding and concerns one community may be cut off.

State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers helped a woman stuck in her vehicle in floodwater in Ballina earlier tonight.

Not long after a couple were led to safety after their car was stuck in floodwaters at Marom Creek, west of Ballina, according to the SES.

SES spokesman Phil Campbell said a rescue operation was also underway on the flood-prone Wyrallah Road at Lismore.

"The weather has deteriorated quite rapidly up there," he said.

"We have had about 80 calls for assistance in the last two hours."

Mr Campbell said there had been heavy falls on the north coast tonight, causing flash flooding.

"We have had reports that streams are rising fairly quickly and a lot of flash flooding as the rescues would show," he said.

On the Mid North Coast a minor flood warning is in place for the Bellinger, Orara and Hastings rivers.

Toormina, near Coffs Harbour, recorded 110mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday.

Mr Campbell said there was concern up to 500 people around the village of Thora could be isolated by rising floodwaters.

"But we are not certain if the bridge (to the area) will be cut or not," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts the rain will start to ease early Thursday morning.
