Heavy surf will pound the New South Wales coastline this weekend as a low-pressure system moves across southern Australia.

Weatherzone has forecast wave heights of three to four metres along the central and southern NSW coast tomorrow and Saturday.

Swell is set to peak at four to 4.5 metres in Sydney on the weekend, Weatherzone said.

And the lengthy period between wave crests - set to reach 10 to 12 seconds on the weekend - will generate "deceptively powerful" surf.

The heavy swell should move offshore by Monday, easing conditions along the NSW coast.

No surf warnings are currently in place for NSW as of 7.30am AEDT today, but people are urged to check the Bureau of Meteorology's warning page for NSW to stay up to date.
