Fans tricked into expecting new Harry Potter work by J.K. Rowling's cryptic tweet

Harry Potter fans have gone wild today believing J.K. Rowling secretly revealed a new project for the boy wizard, only for the author to ruin their dreams.

The author sent fans into a flurry on Monday when she tweeted to her 3.78 million followers: "Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand won't tolerate this nonsense."

"Something to ponder while I'm away X," she followed up her puzzle with.

Fans spent two days trying to decipher the cryptic tweet before one clever decoder today declared they had it solved.

Rowling's anagram can be perfectly rearranged to read: "Harry returns! Won't say any details now. A week off. No comment."

Believing it was the news they had long waited for, fans of the Hogwarts hero were understandably excited at the prospects.

But with greater effect than an ice bucket challenge, Rowling this morning poured cold water over the Potter rumours.

After a couple of hints (including "An example of something it doesn't say: "I brung bick Harry. U gladd. Me go wurcke now. No speak."), she revealed the correct answer – which, it should be said, is vaguely related to her mystical series.

"Newt Scamander only meant to stay in New York for a few hours."

Rowling was referring to the character Newt Scamander who will appear in her upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on one of the textbooks owned by Potter in the wizard series.

"OK, the next riddle is... kidding. As I said (was it only 2 days ago?) I've got a novel to finish and a screenplay to tweak," Rowling tweeted this morning.

"Thank you, thank you, for being the kind of people who get excited about an anagram."
