'I would have been dead': Tracy Grimshaw's safety message for fellow horse riders

A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw has urged all horse riders to wear a helmet, telling viewers she would have died had she not been wearing one when she fell from her mount earlier this month.

Grimshaw was rushed to Westmead Hospital with head injuries after the accident on May 7 and only returned to the ACA desk tonight.

She thanked ACA viewers for their messages of support while she was recovering and said their wishes had helped her.

But the 54-year-old host had an important message for riders.

"I got off comparatively lightly, mostly due to wearing a helmet," she said at the close of tonight's show.

"I have no doubt I would have been dead without it."

Grimshaw was unconscious for around 15 minutes after the accident, which was caused when her horse, Wombat, was spooked by a lawnmower.
