Grandmother wakes from coma after hit-and-run in NSW

A grandmother critically injured and allegedly left for dead in a hit-and-run on the NSW Central Coast has woken from her coma, but is still expected to be a paraplegic.

Kerrie Edwards, 56, was driving home on Saturday night when she stopped at traffic lights on Sparks Road in Woongarrah just after 10pm.

But the aged care nurse had to be cut from the wreckage of her vehicle after a car allegedly smashed into it and sent it spinning into a kerb.

The impact left her with serious injuries, including bleeding on the brain and a broken pelvis.

Today, she was surrounded by family when she awoke from a coma but doctors fear she will not walk again.

Police allege the 24-year-old driver fled from the scene after smashing into Mrs Edwards’ car.

They are now investigating if he had been drinking at the Wyong Leagues Club before getting behind the wheel.
