The coalition party room has agreed to the Turnbull government's new schools funding deal, against only minimal opposition.

A dozen MPs spoke in support of the package - labelled Gonski 2.0 - which will lift commonwealth funding from $17.5 billion in 2017 to $30.6 billion by 2027.

Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews are understood to have been the only MPs to speak against the plan, which has attracted criticism from Catholic school authorities.
