There will be no state funeral for former Queensland premier Wayne Goss, with his family opting for a memorial service instead.

Mr Goss's family says that was what the former Labor leader wanted.

A joint statement from Mr Goss's wife Roisin and two children said the family had been humbled to hear from countless people since the former premier died aged 63 on Monday after a long battle with brain cancer.

Premier Campbell Newman offered a state funeral for Mr Goss, but the family declined the offer.

"We and all Wayne's family greatly appreciate Premier Newman's gracious offer of a state funeral for Wayne," the statement said.

"However, in keeping with Wayne's wishes, we will hold a memorial service organised by the family, rather than a state funeral."

The family thanked those who had paid tribute to Mr Goss and said arrangements for the memorial service would be confirmed when they are finalised.
