A man is fighting for life in hospital after a brutal stabbing attack on the Gold Coast's glitter strip.

Those allegedly involved made a run for it before their getaway attempt came to a crashing end.

Police say just half an hour earlier, at least three of the men were involved in a group disturbance in Surfers Paradise where a 20-year-old man, who they didn't know, was stabbed.

The man was left with a life-threatening wound to his back and was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital.

His attackers fled before police arrived.

Detectives set up a crime scene and tracked the trio to the crash site where they were arrested.

Charges are yet to be laid.
