A lack of blood at the scene of a horse’s mutilation has led Gold Coast authorities to believe they are looking for a trained butcher.

Angie, a 21-year-old mare, was discovered by her owner, Carolyn Jeffrey, in a shallow dam at Courtney Road, Upper Coomera on August 12 with all four legs severed around the knee and hock joints.

RSPCA Inspector Sommer Heath-Crilley said the absence of blood was baffling and the RSPCA has urged anyone with information to come forward.

Dr Tim Hawthorne from the Gold Coast and Nerang Equine believes the suspect is likely an experienced butcher or hunter, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

Blood tests sent to Flemington to determine the cause of death returned inconclusive results. "We were hoping the tests would give us a clue," Inspector Crilley said.

"But now we’ve hit a brick wall and we desperately need help from the public."
