Two jet-ski riders have sprung into action after a houseboat caught fire on the Gold Coast this morning.

The owner initially tried to extinguish the flames but was forced to jump from the property after the blaze took hold about 6.30am.

Two jet-ski riders attempted to put out the flames before fire crews and water police were able to access the site.

It took about an hour for the fire to be completely extinguished, leaving the houseboat with extensive damage.

Police said the blaze was started by an electrical appliance.

The boat owner was rescued from the water and did not have any physical injuries.
