Gillard reflects during Canberra visit

For Julia Gillard, returning to the city where she was elevated and deposed as prime minister invokes mixed feelings.

But she needn't be concerned about the reception she receives in Canberra these days.

On Friday she was bestowed with an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra for her work in the education field.

The new Dr Gillard touched on the tumultuous times she'd endured in the capital.

"Some of the greatest highs and some of the hardest lows of my life have been lived in this city," she told the audience of staff and students.

She said Canberra was more than the politicians who descended on the town for parliamentary sitting weeks, although she admitted those MPs didn't exactly "give the city best reputation it would like."

The former prime minister said she was proud of receive the honour, touching on her legacy on school, VET and university reforms when in power.

Looking forward, Dr Gillard said Australia would benefit from investing in education.

"Our best resource won't be what's in the grounds but in the minds of our people."
