Tradies find giant moth at Queensland school worksite

Tradies renovating a school in Queensland's southeast arrived on site to find a huge moth hanging out in one of the new classrooms.

The builders at Mount Cotton State School got a shock when they started their shift on Monday, seeing the giant insect sitting amongst their equipment.

The school posted photos of the giant moth perched precariously on the end of a saw with its legs hanging over the edge to show the sheer size of it.

People commented on the Facebook post and said it was the biggest moth they had seen.

"Love it! Never leaving the windows open ever again though," one follower commented.

"I would genuinely cease to exist if someone came near me with one of those," another said.

"That thing looks like a dehydrated koala," another added.

The Giant Wood Moth, or Endoxyla cinereus, is common in Queensland's southeast but are rarely seen in the flesh, according to the Queensland Government website.

As adults, the Giant Wood Moth can grow up to 30 grams in weight with a wingspan of 25 centimetres.

The Queensland Government says the moth can be a pest, weakening trees by burrowing into them to feed.

The tradies who found the moth took it back into the neighbouring rainforest and released it after taking the impressive photos.
