Friends too late to save man who fell 90m down Sydney cliff

Friends say the young man who fell 90 metres to his death from a Sydney cliff this morning, slipped from the ledge after climbing a fence to get a better view.

A group of young tourists came to the picturesque North Head Lookout to watch the sunrise but instead they saw their friend, 25-year-old Welshman Gareth Evans, plunge to his death.

“To me it’s just a completely tragic accident,” Police Sergeant Belinda Caddy said.

“We really feel for his friends that witnessed this, and for his family.”

After the fall it is believed two of Evans’ friends climbed down to the base on ladders used by fishermen but they found him unresponsive.

Police will investigate whether alcohol played a part in his death, and have warned people not to climb over fences on lookout spots.
