French tourist who killed young model Elyse Miller-Kennedy in crash may avoid jail

A French national who killed Far North Queensland model Elyse Miller-Kennedy in a head-on car crash may avoid serving jail time.

Cindy Gonin was due to be sentenced at Cairns District Court today, but the judge said he could not proceed without a medical report.

Judge Shanahan said Ms Gonin's psychological state may affect her penalty.

It’s the first time Ms Gonin has returned to Australia since the collision in Dimbulah on August 3 last year.

Using the help of a French translator, she pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of 17-year-old Elyse, a Miss World contestant and year 12 student.

Police alleged the French tourist was driving on the wrong side of the road when the tragedy occurred.

Elyse suffered critical head and facial injuries, and died in hospital one week after the crash.

Ms Gonin was also seriously injured in the crash, and is still unable to walk without crutches.

The case returns to court on Friday.
