Fraud charges over green energy scam

A 60-year-old Perth man has been charged with fraud after he allegedly duped investors in renewable energy out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Police claim the Caversham man designed and built prototype machines purported to generate renewable energy, which he showed to investors, promising large returns.

They say investors poured about $500,000 into the scheme between 2012 and 2014, and the man used the money for other purposes.

On Wednesday, police said the man had been charged with 16 counts of gains benefit by fraud.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on July 15.

"Major Fraud Squad Detectives wish to remind members of the public that before making a decision on any investments, to conduct extensive research and seek professional independent advice," police said.
