More than 40,000 vapes seized after raids across Brisbane

Authorities seized more than 40,000 vaping products with an estimated street value of $1.2 million during raids across Brisbane.

The vapes were uncovered at homes and storage units across the city during a multi-agency operation on Tuesday, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said today.

The raids were part of a major crime investigation into money laundering, illicit tobacco and nicotine vaping products, involving the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission, Queensland Police, Queensland Health, Australian Border Force and the Australian Taxation Office.

The TGA executed as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged importation of unapproved nicotine vaping products.

The vapes are alleged to be prescription medicines that were not included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

They will be tested for scheduled and other dangerous ingredients.

Further investigations may lead to the issuing of fines or court proceedings.

The public is being reminded nicotine vapes are a prescription-only medicine.

Products not approved by the TGA pose a significant public health risk, with many found to contain dangerous and undeclared chemicals.

Penalties forthe illegal importation or supply of unapproved therapeutic goods are up to five years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of $1.25 million.
