Escaped US convict David Sweat has been shot and taken into custody after more than three weeks on the run.

NBC has reported the convicted murderer was wounded and taken alive following a gunfight with law enforcement officers just south of the Canadian border.

Sweat, 36, broke free from the Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6 with fellow inmate Richard Matt.

A New York State Police sergeant on roving patrol saw Sweat and gave chase.

The officer then opened fire, according to CNN.

It is unknown if the escaped prisoner was armed at the time.
