Whereabouts of asylum seeker ex-detainee unknown, after High Court decision freed over 140

It's been revealed that the whereabouts of one of the asylum seekers released from indefinite detention earlier this month are unknown, after several refused to wear ankle monitors.

More than 140 detainees were freed after a High Court decision, forcing the government into a scrambled response as it was revealed that the group included violent and sex offenders.

Hindering the government's efforts to contain the situation has been the fact that the High Court has not yet released its reasoning for the decision, which it is expected to finally do today.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that authorities are currently unaware of the whereabouts of one of the detainees.

Six of the group who required electonic monitoring have refused ankle bracelets, two of them for complex reasons such as medical requirements.

Government Services Minister Bill Shorten said he had "confidence" that police would maintain community safety.

After the High Court releases its judicial reasoning, the government will have just three days to push through any legislative response, before Parliament ends for the year on Thursday.
