New food labelling laws will give Australian shoppers a quick visual guide as to how ocker their groceries really are, the government has claimed.
Under the new system, goods made in Australia will carry the usual green-and-gold kangaroo logo, but with a graph underneath to show how much Australian produce was used to make it, from zero to 100 percent.
Goods that are imported directly from overseas and not made in Australia at all will not carry the kangaroo tag and will have a label that simply states the country of origin.
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said he thought the decision would be welcomed by Australian shoppers.
"They want to make a qualified decision with their money, and this allows them to do it," he said.
The development of the new laws was started after 28 people were infected with hepatitis A from frozen berried imported from China in February.
