First stage of Sydney's WestConnex officially running late

The first stage of the biggest road project in the country, WestConnex, is officially late.

The New South Wales government has confirmed the M4 Widening is expected to open to traffic on July 15, almost three weeks after the contracted completion date.

It means drivers will be charged a maximum $4.56 toll from August 15, after the month long toll-free period expires.

The new road stretches from Church Street Parramatta to Homebush Bay Drive at Homebush and will be four lanes each way.

"The people of Western Sydney have been waiting 30 years for this road, I think three weeks is within reason," Minister for Westconnex Stuart Ayres said.

Tunneling on the 5.5km M4 East from North Strathfield to Haberfield is more than half-way completed.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian toured the site today, which is about 50m underneath Parramatta Road.

"This is a government getting on with the job of delivering the major road infrastructure drivers so desperately need," Ms Berejiklian said.

The government has also announced two joint ventures have been shortlisted to build the M4-M5 link.

The third stage of Westconnex will be delivered independently of the Rozelle Interchange and Iron Cove Link, with the contract expected to be awarded next year.
