Fire warnings as Australia's east coast braces for hot weather

Australia's east coast is bracing for high temperatures with fire weather warnings issued in five states thanks to an unseasonally hot spring day.

The temperatures in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Hobart are predicted to hit the early 30s today, while in Melbourne the mercury is likely to hit 35C.

Hot, dry and very windy conditions have led to total fire bans being issued for much of regional Victoria.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a fire weather warning for the Mallee, North Central, South West and Central forecast districts.

Tasmanians living in the Furneaux Islands, North East, East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East districts are bracing for winds averaging 40-50km/h and wind gusts of up to 100km/h on Tuesday.

A fire weather warning has been issued for those districts because of the low humidity and high temperatures.

Meanwhile, South Australia's Country Fire Service is concerned unseasonally hot, windy and very dry conditions could spark fast-moving and uncontrollable fires in the state's southeast, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island.

The weather bureau has also warned of a very high fire danger in Queensland's Central Highlands and Coalfields forecast district, which includes the towns of Clermont, Emerald and Moranbah.
