'Stick it up your jumper': Simon Holmes à Court and Jane Hume clash live on air

Businessman Simon Holmes à Court and Liberal Senator Jane Hume have clashed again — this time live on Nine's election coverage.

Holmes à Court, a political activist, has funded the campaigns of many of the so-called teal independent candidates contesting Liberal seats. However, he has denied being "the man behind the teals".

"I'm a convener of Climate 200, which has supported a lot of the teal candidates but each of the campaigns has grown up within the community," he said from Treasurer Josh Frydenberg's seat of Kooyong in Melbourne.

Climate 200 is "a community crowdfunded initiative established in 2019 to support pro-climate, pro-integrity, and pro-gender equity candidates", according to its website.

Holmes à Court was asked about his confrontation with superannuation minister Jane Hume, who is on Nine's election night panel.

An "ugly" clash between the pair was filmed by none other than Frydenberg a few days ago.

In the video, which was posted on social media by the Liberal Party, Hume can repeatedly be heard telling Holmes à Court to leave her alone, which he ignored.

Holmes à Court — the son of Australia's first billionaire — is suing Hume for defamation.

"Do you regret the scenes at the pre-poll booth just in the last week of the campaign involving one of our panellists here, Jane Hume?" host Alicia Loxley asked him.

Holmes à Court: Look, Jane has for a long time spread lies and mistruths about me. I've asked her publicly to withdraw and she won't. I asked her in a public forum. Probably wasn't the place to do it but I'm looking forward to that retraction of lies from Jane Hume.

Loxley: That didn't answer the question. Do you regret the scenes?

Holmes à Court: Unfortunately. Those who have seen the full video will see really what went on. I think, as I've said to Jane, I gave my apology, I don't think that was an appropriate place for it but I hope we can get a resolution and she can withdraw the lies as we come out of this election.

Loxley: Jane Hume?

Hume: I got a 'sorry not sorry'. If you see the full video, it was a set-up. Simon, it was pretty disgraceful behaviour. I hope it took some paint off your celebrations tonight.

Holmes à Court: Looking forward to getting your full apology, thanks, Jane.

Hume: Stick it up your jumper.

Peter Overton looked momentarily stunned and summed the exchange up quite nicely: "that was interesting".
