The federal government began budget day bright and early, with key ministers marching out to spruik the 2025-2026 national financial package at Parliament House in Canberra.

Today's federal budget is not only the fourth delivered by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, but the final one by the Albanese government before the impending election.

While it is expected to contain less surprises than previous ones, it is certain to push the government's credentials on economic management ahead of voters heaing to the ballot box by May 17.

Chalmers has already flagged providing cost-of-living relief will be at the front and centre of this budget.

They include extended energy rebates to help families with soaring energy bills and the previously announced $8.5 billion boost for Medicare to expand bulk billing.

But early today, Chalmers also acknowledged the budget would be shaped by global events, with US President's tariffs threatening a major trade war.

"We do know that there's more work to do because people are still under pressure and the global outlook is uncertain and it is challenging," he said.

The federal opposition also lost no time in getting their pitch in on budget day.

Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor said this morning the budget will be for the Labor Party instead of "hard-working Australian households who are trying to get ahead"

Taylor was speaking ahead of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's reply speech tomorrow.

Taylor said the Albanese government's budget deficit has spelled "utter disaster" for households.
