Exclusive Melbourne private schools investigate whether pupils gatecrashed Kew house party

Security experts have called for laws to target gatecrashers after teens broke into a Melbourne home during a party on the weekend.

Teenage victims were forced to barricade their door and were left terrified after 30 youths interrupted their quiet gathering in Kew on Saturday night.

Witnesses said the gatecrashers hurled bottles through windows and attempted to steal alcohol.

"One of the guys jumped the fence and opened the gate," the father of one of the victims said today.

"They came into the house and tried to steal phones.

"It's frightening with that group empowerment with alcohol and potentially drugs you just never know how things will turn out."

The prestigious Xavier College and Carey Baptist Grammar School, both based nearby, are investigating claims some of their students were allegedly spotted at the scene.

It is also feared the group has been targeting other homes, after victims recognised some of the faces of the assailants.

Parents say they are stunned after police said they are not able to charge the trespassers, only the people who threw bottles.

Former police officer turned security operator Naomi Oakley says an urgent crackdown is needed.

"The offence of gatecrasher needs to be looked at, and therefore police have the adequate legislation to deal with it," Ms Oakley said.

Victorian Police and the two private schools are now looking into the incident.
